Your April 13, 2017 Canadian Cannabis Legislation Viewing Guide

Posted by

Big day tomorrow.

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada will introduce a Bill entitled “An Act respecting cannabis and to amend the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the Criminal Code and other Acts”.  Pretty glamorous title, no?

If you want to follow all the action as it unfolds here is your play by play guide for April 13, 2017.

The House of Commons typically beings its sitting at 10:00 am EST.  You can expect the government to introduce the new cannabis legislation shortly after the sitting commences at 10:00 am.  If you want to watch the action live as it unfolds you can follow along on CPAC.

This introduction is technically referred to as the “first reading”.  The Bill will be considered read and will be printed.  There will be no debate from opposition Members of Parliament at the first reading.

Although the business of government orders can extend to 2:00 pm we know that the government will have its business wrapped up before noon because Health Canada is holding a press conference at 12:05 pm.

The official announcement with respect to the press conference does not explicitly mention cannabis, but we know from who is participating that this press conference is most definitely about cannabis:

The Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, the Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, and the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue, along with Parliamentary Secretary Bill Blair, will make an important announcement.

In other words, a who’s who of government members responsible for bringing forward the cannabis legislation will all be getting together at 12:05 for an important announcement.  Want to watch the press conference too?  No problem, Health Canada will be broadcasting it here.

Bet you never thought you’d call in sick to work to watch CPAC and a Health Canada press conference did you?

We’ll be updating you as things unfold tomorrow and of course will be providing detailed analysis of the legislation in the coming days and weeks.
